A structural inspection is typically only undertaken when a structural defect or problem is discovered or suspected. Normally during the process of a Home Buyer’s Survey if any structural problems are suspected they will be documented for additional investigation by an expert structural engineer, who will be able to determine the specific problem and suggest the possible solutions to correct. Where there is a larger suspected problem or the building’s history is particularly poor, a general structural inspection may be undertaken which will involve an evaluation of the entire structure and all load-bearing components of the building, alongside inspections of the surrounding site and any possible effects it might have, such as drainage issues or any trees near to the foundations of the building.

Structural surveys can also be undertaken on an ad hoc basis on existing homes if you suspect any sort of structural defect, such as cracking in walls, sagging of ceilings or roofs, or subsistence around the foundations of the building. When searching for a structural engineer, look for Chartered Surveyors who’ll be members of either the Institution of Structural Engineers or the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Caldicot is a modest town and community within Monmouthshire, southeast Wales. The name ‘Caldicot’ is generally believed to come from the Old English phrase ‘calde cot’ which means ‘cold hut’. A cold hut is an exposed shelter made use of by either humans or animals. In accordance with population estimates collected in 2014, the town boasts a permanent population of 11,500. One of the oldest buildings in Caldicot, Llanthony Secunda Manor was built about 1120 as a grange for monks from Llanthony Secunda Priory in Gloucester. By the middle of the 1800s, Caldicot developed into a little farming village. Even so, the coming of the South Wales Railway brought London and Cardiff within fairly easy reach, though Caldicot station itself wasn’t opened till 1936. Due to the industry which was attracted by the opening of the railway, Henry Hughes of Tintern built a wireworks next to the railway in 1862, which was soon to come to be the village’s principal employer and attracted many new workers. In 1880, it became a tinplate works for the canning business. A famous landmark within the town is Court House, which was the house of baker Henry Jones, the inventor of self-raising flour, from 1864 until his death in 1891. He is buried in the churchyard. Caldicot is also most famously called the location of Caldicot Castle and lake. The area has well known footpaths along the Caldicot Levels and the coastal path can be walked. Nearby tourist attractions are Caerwent and Wentwood. To the north west, Dewstow House dates from about 1804. Substantial gardens and grottoes constructed after 1895 have been undergoing restoration since 2000 and are now open to the public. For all your home improvement jobs, make certain that you use trustworthy specialists in Caldicot to make sure you get a top quality service.
