A structural inspection is commonly only undertaken when a structural defect or problem is identified or suspected. Typically during the process of a Home Buyer’s Survey if any structural problems are suspected they will be documented for additional investigation by a skilled structural engineer, who’ll be able to determine the precise problem and recommend the possible options to put right. If there is a larger suspected problem or the building’s background is particularly poor, a general structural inspection may be carried out which will involve an assessment of the entire structure and all load-bearing elements of the building, along with inspections of the surrounding site and any possible effects it might have, such as drainage issues or any trees near to the foundations of the home.
Structural surveys can be completed on an ad hoc basis on existing houses if you suspect any type of structural defect, for example cracking in walls, sagging of ceilings or roofs, or subsistence around the foundations of the building. When looking for a structural engineer, look for Chartered Surveyors who’ll be members of either the Institution of Structural Engineers or the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Abbots Ripton is a village in Cambridgeshire. It is approximately five miles north of Huntingdon. It has a population of just 309, and covers 4,191 acres of land. The parish is situated in the District of Huntingdonshire, which also includes St Ives, St Neots, Godmanchester and Ramsey.
The village was the site of the Abbots Ripton railway disaster in 1876, where a Flying Scotsman train was wrecked during a blizzard.
Abbots Ripton has a lengthy history. The Domesday book records it as Riptone, and in the 11th century it was known as Riptune. Moat Farm has trees dating back to Shakespeare’s era, and St. Andrew’s church tower is approximately 400 years old. It houses a bell manufactured in 1400 and another from 1671. The nave, aisle and porch of the church are even older, erected in the 13th century.
The village is home to a 17th-century pub, the Three Horseshoes, which was severely damaged by a fire in 2010 caused by embers in the chimney.
