Surveying can come in various forms. Many homeowners will encounter a Home Buyer’s Survey included in the process of selling or buying a home. The Home Buyer’s Survey is performed to make sure that the home buyer is fully conscious of the condition of the home they are buying, as well as any potential issues around insulation, damp proofing or drainage. For older properties or for properties where the buyer is less certain of its condition, a full building survey can be conducted, which goes into more detail than a Home Buyer’s Survey, and will point out any further defects with the property as well as including an assessment of the land surrounding the building.

Surveyors can also assist with any extensions, conversions or alterations that you intend to have done on your existing property. They will offer advice about how your alteration might have an effect on your neighbours, either in terms of their right to light or by needing a party wall agreement.

When searching for a company to attempt surveying work, ensure you choose a chartered surveyor qualified by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.
