A structural inspection is generally only performed when a structural defect or problem is recognised or suspected. Typically as part of the process of a Home Buyer’s Survey if any structural problems are suspected they’ll be documented for further investigation by a skilled structural engineer, who’ll be able to determine the precise problem and advise on the likely options to rectify. If there is a larger suspected problem or the building’s history is particularly poor, a general structural inspection may be carried out which will consist of an inspection of the entire structure and all load-bearing facets of the building, alongside inspections of the surrounding site and any possible effects it could have, such as drainage issues or any trees close to the foundations of the building.
Structural surveys can be completed on an ad hoc basis on existing properties if you suspect any type of structural defect, like cracking in walls, sagging of ceilings or roofs, or subsistence around the foundations of the building. When looking for a structural engineer, look for Chartered Surveyors who will be members of either the Institution of Structural Engineers or the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Abergele is a little market town on the north coast of Wales in Conwy. It has a population of 10,577, and 29% of them speak Welsh. It is surrounded by woodland hillsides, and they contain caves which house the rare lesser horseshoe bat. One of the hills that surrounds it is Castell Cawr, which is an Iron Age hillfort.
The town is the site of Gwrych Castle, which was founded between 1819 and 1825. The current owner tried to sell it in 2006, but it went unsold. The Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust looks after the condition of the property and it is currently being restored. The film Prince Valiant was shot there in 1996.
Abergele’s church, St Michael’s, contains a tombstone with a strange inscription on it. It reads ‘Here lieth in St Michael’s churchyard a man who had his dwelling three miles to the north.’ The sea is no more than half a mile away today, so it seems that the sea has progressed a lot over the centuries.
