A structural inspection is normally only undertaken when a structural defect or issue is identified or suspected. Generally during the process of a Home Buyer’s Survey if any structural problems are suspected they will be noted for additional investigation by a skilled structural engineer, who’ll be able to recognise the precise problem and advise on the practical methods to fix. When there is a more substantial suspected issue or the building’s background is particularly poor, a general structural inspection may be carried out which will consist of an assessment of the complete structure and all load-bearing areas of the building, alongside inspections of the surrounding site and any potential impacts it might have, such as drainage issues or any trees close to the foundations of the building.

Structural surveys can be performed on an ad hoc basis on existing buildings if you suspect any type of structural defect, for example cracking in walls, sagging of ceilings or roofs, or subsistence around the foundations of the building. When looking for a structural engineer, look for Chartered Surveyors who’ll be members of either the Institution of Structural Engineers or the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Battersea is a residential district of south London in the London Borough of Wandsworth. It is 2.9 miles south west of Charing Cross. The district has one of southwest London’s most important parks, Battersea Park.

In 2001, Battersea had a populace of 75,651, but by 2011 the number stood at 73,345, noting a slight reduction. There’s a significant area of public housing estates built in the mid-20th century, nearly all situated north of the major railway lines from Fairfield to Queenstown. There are four substantially large estates; Surrey Lane Estate towards the north, Doddington and Rollo Estate, Patmore Estate towards the east plus the Winstanley Estate, that is recognised to be the birthplace of the garage collective So Solid Crew.

There are several notable landmarks in Battersea, one of which is the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. Before that, the Temporary Home for Lost and Starving Dogs was based in Battersea following moving from Holloway in 1871. Other landmarks consist of the New Covent Garden Market, a significant fruit and vegetable wholesale marketplace, and the now disused Battersea Power Station which was built between 1929 and 1939. There have been several redevelopment projects since the 1980s to change the station into an entertainment and commercial centre, but to date all attempts failed.
