Technical drawings are created for a number of different products, and you might come across technical drawings at various stages throughout any building work you undertake. Typically, technical drawings are produced by an architect or structural engineer when planning a conversion or extension. These technical drawings are generally produced for the construction contractor, and will contain specifications for the types of materials used for specific components of the build as well as the methods of construction to be undertaken. Technical drawings also provide measurements for a variety of aspects of the building, like ceiling heights and floor plans.

Technical drawings are also produced for many of the discrete elements which may be bought as part of the project, for example windows and doors. Manufacturers will produce technical drawings for their products to ensure they can be incorporated as easily as possible into building designs. Technical drawings will also usually need to be submitted to local authorities to receive approval that the planned work conforms to building regulations.
