The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was established in 1965 when 3 smaller council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It’s governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets towards the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth to the west and the London Borough of Lewisham towards the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. According to population estimates created part way through 2014, Southwark features a permanent population of about 302538 inhabitants.
The borough is residence to a number of cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich houses the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
